Anthropomorphism is the tendency to read human qualities, intentions or feelings into nonhuman systems. In AI, it can appear when a system uses conversational language, remembers context, responds quickly or presents itself through social cues.
Why it matters
Anthropomorphism can make AI systems feel more understandable, comfortable or emotionally available. It can also create expectations that the system understands, cares, remembers or intends more than it actually does. This matters for trust, attachment, disclosure and responsibility.
The issue is not simply that people are irrational. Interfaces can invite social interpretation, especially when they use human-like language or conversational rhythms.
What not to simplify
Anthropomorphism is not proof that a system is conscious or relational in a human sense. It is also not always a naive mistake. It is a pattern of interpretation shaped by design, context, need and social habit.
