Cognitive Offloading
The use of external tools, systems or the environment to carry part of cognitive work.
Cognitive offloading can include writing things down, calculating, searching, remembering or drafting with tools. In AI use, it should not be reduced to the claim that AI weakens thinking. It can also change where and how cognitive effort happens.
Why it matters
- It gives a more precise language than saying that AI simply helps or harms thinking.
- It helps ask what is being delegated: memory, wording, planning, search or judgment.
- It connects everyday AI use with attention, effort and responsibility.
- It keeps the question open: offloading can support work, reshape work or create new risks.
What not to simplify
Cognitive offloading is not automatically a failure of thinking. It is also not a label for every use of AI. The important question is what cognitive work moves to the tool, what remains with the person and what checks still matter.
